Permanent Layout Construction Photos

Phase I Construction

Beginning of Phase 1 construction. The 2"x 6" frame is assembled on the floor in preparation for the  3/4" plywood top for the yard and station area

A look at the 2"x 6" framing for Phase 1 that will include the yard, locomotive service facilities and station area.

With the 3/4" plywood applied to the 2"x 6" frame it is now ready to be raised to the 48" level so track work may begin. When this section is finished it will be raised again but this time to its permanent level 78" above the floor.... No duck under here for us short members....

Securing Phase 1 at the 48" level. As you can see in the photo it took two chain falls to raise this portion of the layout.

With the table now secure at the 48" level we are doing some last minute fastening and cleaning in preparation for track work.

At this point the homasote has been installed and track work is starting to move tight along. Here we have the East end of the main freight yard bring installed. The main lines are code 148 steel rail and the yard tracks are code 125 steel rail.

This is the approach to the station area on Phase 1. Note the usage of three double slip switches at the approach. The station will go in the opening where the level is sitting on the layout, and there will be station platforms in both open areas on either side of the double track main.

This photo shows the progress of track work on Phase 1 as of May 2003. The large open area in the middle will house a Diesel and Steam facility along with a 120' Turntable.
